  • C-Fu Gourmet

    2051 W. Warner Rd. Chandler

    480-899-3888

One of the few Valley Chinese restaurants that could hold its own in New York's or San Francisco's Chinatown. C-Fu specializes in seafood so fresh, most of it is still swimming when you order it. Don't miss the chrysanthemum-steamed fish, Marco Polo lobster or Dungeness crab. Non-seafood dishes are also expertly prepared, particularly the Mongolian beef and spicy pork chop. Dim sum daily, too. Read our review.

  • Diamond's Sports Grille

    161 N. Centennial Way Mesa

    480-844-3888

We know what you're thinking: How could we not name Sluggo's the best Mesa sports bar? Well, we are (sorta) because the legendary Sluggo's is now Diamond's Sports Grille. The bar was opened by former Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray and his partner in the booth, Steve Stone, and it's gone through a few names en route to its current one. The ties to the Cubs, who are immortalized in murals on the walls of this bar near the Cubs' spring training site north of downtown Mesa, are still strong, though. We hope they get a less generic name paying tribute to the spot's history — "Holy Cow's," maybe, or "Something Funny Will Farrell Said in That SNL Sketch" — but even if it that never happens, Diamond's is still the best sports bar in Mesa.

  • Distrito

4000 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Central Scottsdale

    480-970-4444

Celebrity chef Jose Garces’s modern Mexican restaurant inside The Saguaro hotel in Old Town Scottsdale is big, colorful, and lively with a spectacular to so-so “modern Mexican” menu of small plates featuring twists on the street food of Mexico City and Mexican Barbacoa (barbecue). Take in the display of brightly painted Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) skull masks, the bar with over 100 varieties of tequila, and a eclectic array of bright pink, glitter, plaid and floral patterns on tables, seating, and walls, then start with the refreshing yellowfin tuna ceviche, the lively Chilango Chop salad, or rich green pozole afloat with pieces of pork belly with crispy skins and littleneck clams. Then, move into excellent offerings like the trio of tender pulled pork street tacos, creamy poblano corn rice, and Yucatan-style smoked chicken. Read our review.

  • Duke's Sports Bar & Grill

7607 E. McDowell Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-675-9724

If you enjoy watching frolf, there’s not a bad seat on the sprawling patio at Duke's Sports Bar & Grill, which backs right up to the Vista del Camino Disc Golf Course along the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt in south Scottsdale. And if you enjoy playing frolf, Duke’s is ideal for a pre- or post-game beer (or during — you could easily sneak over in the middle of your round). Inside, you’ll find pool tables, a variety of arcade and shuffleboard units, and a few dozen TVs — even in the bathrooms — all tuned to various sports packages. They’ve got import and domestic beers on tap, strong mixed drinks, and a menu replete with fried food (say hello to the mozzarella sticks for us) and burgers, sandwiches, and salads. Duke’s was started by a father-daughter team, Al and Jackie McCarthy, in 1998. More than two decades later, it's still in the family and going strong.

  • Gallagher's

    3220 E. Baseline Rd. #100 South Phoenix

    602-437-0981

Sports bars are a dime a dozen in every city in the U.S., so it’s hard for one to stand out from the pack. They all have sticky bars, ripped up barstools, cute-after-a-few-drinks bartenders, and TVs that are too often left on a channel no one wants to watch. If we ever had the opportunity to reinvent the wheel, the result would look a lot like Gallagher’s Sports Grill. There’s more for fans than a few tiny screens to stare at. Amenities include off-track betting windows, arcade games, trivia nights, karaoke, a posh outdoor patio complete with waterfall and breathtaking views, and 25 conveniently placed TVs broadcasting everything from the popular football and baseball games to sports with fewer fans, like bowling. The menu is on par too, including American standards like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and grilled meats including baby back ribs and chicken fajitas. The best part? Gallagher’s has six locations spread throughout the Valley in South Phoenix, North Phoenix, Central Phoenix, Carefree, Chandler, and Peoria.

  • Irish Wolfhound Pub

    16811 N. Litchfield Rd. #102 Surprise

    623-214-1004

There are a lot of sports bars on the West side of town, but comfy, approachable Irish pubs? Not so much. Which is exactly why we were so happy to stumble upon Irish Wolfhound Pub in Surprise. The restaurant and bar looks like nothing special from the outside, sure, but walk in and you'll find a modern pub with pool tables, plenty of televisions, and a roomy patio with a fire pit to boot. During our happy hour experience — the pub offers dining and drinking deals everyday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. — we bellied up to the spacious bar and ordered a $2.50 domestic draft. The taps here boast a selection of the usual stuff as well as some awesome local and craft brews, including San Tan Brewery beers and Montana's Big Sky Brewing's IPA.

  • Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles

3133 N. Scottsdale Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-945-1920

One of Phoenix's best soul food restaurants, Lo Lo's Chicken and Waffles is bound to make everyone happy (except maybe vegetarians). The Southern-style fried chicken is extra crispy and served with cinnamon-kissed golden brown waffles. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. If the signature combo seems too strange for you, Lo Lo's also has a waffle breakfast sandwich with choice of meat, chorizo and eggs, shrimp and grits, chicken gizzards and rice, and some of the best hot wings in town. Other soul food favorites include the PHAT AZZ Samich (chicken of catfish with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and dressing), old-fashioned chili served with cornbread, and side dishes like fried okra and collard greens. This is definitely not a diet-friendly place, especially when you spot the irresistible red velvet cake slathered in buttery cream cheese icing. Complete the picture with a glass or two of Red Kool Aid Drank and you'll think you're in the Deep South, not Phoenix or Scottsdale.

  • Mad Chef Gastropub

    3941 E. Chandler Blvd. Ahwatukee

    480-706-1333

The moniker of this stripmall joint in Ahwatukee isn't quite accurate - the vibe is more Irish pub-meets-IHOP. If you find yourself here, expect ordinary bar food with a few flourishes, like hot-out-of-the-oven Belgian pretzel bread.

It also hosts local rock bands on Fridays and Saturdays and karaoke on Mondays and Thursdays. Craft beer and poker are the way to go for Wednesday night though.

  • Pizzeria Bianco

    4743 N. 20th St. East Phoenix

    602-368-3273

Chris Bianco, one of Phoenix's best-known chefs and restaurateurs, has expanded his local empire with this cozy bistro in the Town and Country Shopping Center. A small, rotating menu of Italian standards and signature Italian-American creations uses the fresh, locally grown ingredients and hits its mark every time with flavor-packed salads, pasta dishes, and entrées priced usually between $15 and $25. As at other Bianco properties, you can expect to wait on the somewhat secluded patio for one of the handful of tables inside. But most likely, you'll discover that your meal at Pizzeria Bianco was well worth the wait.

  • Rocket Fizz

    13681 N. Litchfield Rd. Surprise

    602-942-3499

For a quick dose of nostalgia, take a peek inside this mom-and-pop soda and candy shop in Surprise. The brand is based in California, and the interior certainly has a laidback, beachy vibe, but the only location in Arizona is independently owned and operated. It’s a family-run shop, so don’t be surprised to be greeted and offered recommendations by one of the owners’ kids. There are sweets galore, including an impressive selection of salt water taffy flavors, hard-to-find imported candy bars like the British Yorkie and Kinder Bueno, and even wine-flavored gummies. Rocket Fizz also offers sugar in liquid form, and you could hem and haw all day before choosing from one of 600 types of soda pop. The brand even makes its own sodas in flavors like banana nut, black licorice, green apple jalapeno, marshmallow, and Shirley Temple. Or, pick from other rarities like Brain Wash and Fukola Cola.

  • Sushi 101

    920 E. Univeristy Dr. #101 Tempe

    480-317-0101

This Japanese restaurant is exactly what its name implies: a stepping stone for sushi virgins. Whether you’ve never had raw fish and sticky rice rolled up in seaweed – or love the stuff but have never made it yourself – Sushi 101 will help you along the way to understanding the iconic dish. The menu comes with a glossary of sushi, which breaks down all of the offerings by ingredient. Don’t know that a caterpillar roll has unagi (eel) and avocado? You do now! The restaurant also offers signature creations like the ASU Roll (real crab meat, avocado, and cucumber wrapped with soy paper and topped with fresh salmon, avocado, and creamy ponzu) and the Moon Walk (sweet potato and avocado topped with spicy tuna and sliced lemon). Along with rolls, Sushi 101 serves sashimi, nigiri, bento specials, noodles, soups, salads, and entrées like grilled salmon and chicken katsu. To learn the trick of the trade, join the sushi making class offered every Sunday afternoon for just $15.

  • Tacos De Juarez

1017 N. Seventh St. Central Phoenix

    602-258-1744

This humble-looking abode serves less-than-humble vittles served up by a friendly staff. The cheese enchiladas are among the best in town-topped with guacamole and sour cream and stuffed with a mélange of cheddars. Hard-shell carne asadas, with great flavors and just the right amount of cheese, are a house specialty, as is the fluffy Mexican rice, redolent with tomato and onion. (We order an extra side of the rice, it's so good.) Mexican breakfast dishes are available, and the lunch and dinner menus can be ordered from throughout the day.

  • The Tamale Store

15842 N. Cave Creek Rd. North Phoenix

    602-435-2604

You can order a tamales to-go at thousands of Mexican restaurants in Arizona, but the corn masa delicacies at The Tamale Store can’t be topped. After all, tamales are the only thing the shop makes! No lards, shortenings, gluten, preservatives, soy, or MSG are used in the process, and the fillings are always made with the freshest produce and extra lean meats. With twenty years of catering experience, the family behind the business pours a lot of passion into the traditional dish, creating over 20 flavors. You can always pick from standards like beef red chile, chicken green chile, and beans and cheese. But if you’re up for a little adventure, try one of The Tamale Store’s inventive creations like spinach and cream cheese, vegan zucchini salsa, or the flavor of the month (for example, ground beef, dried nuts, and fruit for the holidays). There’s also a selection of dessert tamales like sweet corn and blueberry cream cheese. If you can’t make it to the North Phoenix storefront on Cave Creek Road, look for them at the farmers’ market nearest you.

  • Via Delosantos Mexican Food and Lounge

9120 N. Central Ave. North Phoenix

    602-997-6239

Known far and wide for its authentic machaca, this family-run restaurant serves strong margaritas and some pretty great chips and salsa. The cool cantina is always jammed, probably because it offers one of the most extensive tequila lists in town. Afterward, slide on into one of the dining rooms, where you'll peruse a menu that offers more vegetarian selections than possibly any other in town. Calibasitas and Corn with Cheese is a rare specialty, as is the Carnitas Picante Calabcitas, a chunk of cod, grilled with green onions, tomatoes, and a side of crunchy grilled carrots. And the Albondigas Soup will have you racing back for more. More soppapias, shrimp burritos, and tasty flan, that is.

  • Vovomeena

    1515 N. 7th Ave. #170 Central Phoenix

    602-252-2541

This breakfast and brunch restaurant is a refreshing change in the sea of ordinary chain restaurants at Seventh Avenue and McDowell Road. Diners walk up to the counter to order dishes such as Pain Perdu, French toast made of banana bread pudding and topped with whisky caramel, and Tortilla Espanola, a traditional thick Spanish egg-and-potato omelet that looks like a savory slice of cake. If you’re feeling especially ravenous, try the B.M.O.C., a smoked pork chop with a waffle, two eggs, a Portuguese doughnut, and apple-maple syrup. A coffee counter that serves everything from flights of Japanese cold brew to refillable cups of regular Joe. Add a buttermilk pancake or Portuguese doughnut — a small, sweet, cakey concoction sprinkled with powdered sugar — to any order, and thank the breakfast gods for the home-cooked fare.

  • Zoe's Kitchen

521 W. McDowell Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-716-0070

This popular lunch spot looks like a cozy, uptown art gallery-but we know of no art gallery that serves a chicken and slaw pita as good as Zoe's. We're also fans of the Z-Chef Salad, an assemblage of turkey, ham, Swiss and American cheeses, tomato, egg and cucumber served on a bed of lettuce with Zoe's secret house dressing and a fresh hunk of their house-made pita bread. Combined with a bowl of the house specialty Chicken and Orzo Soup, made fresh daily, this is a lunch like no other. Dieters bored with the usual cottage-cheese-and-fruit plate should check out Zoe's Protein Power Plate, a grilled, boneless, skinless chicken breast served with grilled onions over a heaping bed of Zoe's slaw.

However, if you can't take the shame of Ubering to a grocery store, you can opt for a four beer flight to test out some different styles without over-imbibing. Plus, if you have vegetarian or vegan friends, you can all find something to eat on the full menu, which features pizza, sushi, and sandwiches.

The cupcake fad ain't over yet. At least not according to pastry chef Linda Schneider. Named after the glamorous Art Deco period, Schneider's upscale cupcakery in Scottsdale, decked out in marble and glass, features 12 different creations made each day from her family's recipes. Moist, light, and topped with an icing more sugary than creamy, the delicately sweet cherry and vanilla flavors are favorites, faring better than the breakfast and vanilla salted caramel varieties. At $3.35 each and smaller than many boutique cupcakes, these sweet indulgences are more special occasion than frequent eats, so make sure to enlist the help of the friendly counter folk to help direct you to the most popular kinds.

There is a drive-thru, a patio (larger than the restaurant), and inside, a small bar, a handful of dark wood tables, and an eclectic mix of music overhead. In addition to killer coffee and cocktails, there’s a small menu of easy and affordable dishes, including a satisfying sandwich called the OMG, featuring prosciutto, mascarpone, and figs, and a light yet wonderfully creamy artichoke and spinach dip.
