  • Harumi Sushi & Sake

114 W. Adams St., Suite C101 Central Phoenix

    602-258-0131

This small, buzzy restaurant is a solid pick for contemporary sushi and nigiri in downtown Phoenix. The first thing you’ll probably notice is the restaurant’s signature “purple” rice — Harumi uses nutrient-rich Forbidden black rice, which turns a burgundy-like color after being soaked and cooked. Highlights include the H3, a pleasantly snappy and creamy roll featuring spicy tuna and salmon, adorned with spoonfuls of delicate fish roe. Harumi is also home to one of the more accessible omakase (chef’s choice) dinners around town — $35 scores you a substantial, mix-and-match platter of maki rolls and nigiri. There probably won’t be any deep cuts or slightly obscure fish on your plate, but it more than delivers on the timeless pairing of cleanly carved fish pressed against rice.

  • Hash Kitchen

4315 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-612-5580

Hash Kitchen has been on a mission, or so it seems, to replace the mimosa with the bloody mary as the ultimate breakfast cocktail. The popular brunch chain is armed with a 60-ingredient, build-your-own bloody mary bar. This brunch spot offers a chef-driven menu overseen by, appropriately enough, executive chef Joey Maggiore. We’re talking pretzel eggs Benedict with beer-cheese hollandaise, some fun charcuterie options, and the restaurant’s well-known hashes.

This Las Vegas-based restaurant chain offers Cajun-style, super-fresh seafood at market prices. In a small bar, a pair of dining rooms, and a wide outdoor patio, diners eat shellfish by the bagful -- pounds of it, surprisingly fresh and seasoned with flavors of chili and celery salt and big notes of Cajun spice. You choose from one of four sauces and different levels of spiciness, and shellfish comes to you shell-on in plastic bags, having been doused with the high-flavor sauce and spices you chose. • Hue Gourmet

    66 S. Dobson Rd. Mesa

    480-251-7429

Focusing on the distinctive food of Hue (pronounced "hweh"), located in the center of Vietnam and the country’s one-time imperial capital, this counter-service stand in the food court of Mekong Plaza, the Asian-themed mall in Mesa, is a rare treat for lovers of Vietnamese food and a one-of-a-kind experience for everyone else. Highly flavorful, ridiculously affordable, and unlike anything else in the Valley, the menu includes a taste of the city’s royal side as well as more modern-day meals inspired from throughout Vietnam. To start or share, try banh knot, bite-size versions of the Vietnamese pancake, or dainty dishes of petite filled rice cakes called banh beo. Stellar soups include the lemongrass-heavy bo Hue and the Vietnamese crab soup called banh canh cua. And don’t miss the popular Hue street food com hen for an intensely unique and intricate dish that gets better with every bite.

  • Humble Pie

3890 W. Happy Valley Rd. Glendale

    623-580-4300

The distinctive pies at this bustling pizzeria have a crisp, chewy crust and unique toppings (shrimp with burrata, basil, and lemon zest; potato and roasted garlic with fontina, gorgonzola, and rosemary) that we can't get enough of. But even beyond the pizza, there's plenty to love about Humble Pie, especially dishes made with ultra-fresh local organic produce. Owner Tom Kaufman's wine list is both interesting and accessible (as you'd expect from the co-founder of Rancho Pinot), and the full bar includes a decent selection of craft beers. And no matter how full you think you are, don't rule out dessert; a warm apple crostada or some creamy olive oil gelato will disappear more quickly than you think.

  • Ingo's Tasty Food

    4502 N. 40th St. East Phoenix

    602-795-2884

Part upscale diner, part theater-in-the-round, Ingo's interior offers a single curved counter where guests can enjoy superb gourmet burgers crafted around a thick puck of grass-fed beef, cooked to a pinkish medium rare and seasoned with only salt and pepper. The simple cheddar Cheeseburger is moist and chop-house sized, and the Paris Texas Burger, served with smoky-sharp apple barbecue sauce and pancetta, is another winner. A better than decent wine list and some tasty sides (particularly the Shattered Potato Chips) make this a burger destination.

  • Island Sensation Cuisine

830 E. Indian School Rd. Central Phoenix

    602-279-5866

We’re big fans of quality, inexpensive lunches, which is why we also recommend Island Sensation Cuisine. We recommend you start with the house-made ginger beer brew and then work your way down the menu. Chef Lloyd Campbell offers classically Jamaican food, which he fine-tuned in culinary school in Kingston. Plates include classic stewed oxtail with gravy and rice, jerk chicken thighs, and sides like “island” coleslaw.

  • Jalapeño Inferno

20825 N. Pima Rd. North Scottsdale

    480-513-8332

Ah, Tacos al Carbon! We longed for them but couldn't find them anywhere, until Jalapeno Inferno blew into town. Now we can dine daily on these fresh tortillas filled with grilled strips of marinated chicken breast or beefsteak and studded with Jack cheese, onion, cilantro, avocado and tomatillo salsa. When we want a change and are feeling especially hungry, there's always the Chimichanga That Ate Nogales, another flour tortilla stuffed with shredded chicken or beef, then deep fried and garnished with sour cream and red enchilada sauce. Add a couple of margaritas to these or any other Jalapeno dish, and you've got a giant pile of happiness.

Can there be too much of a good thing? Not at Jimmy & Joe's. Their New York-style "serious slices" must be seen to be believed. Even one piece of a piping hot pie requires its own metal pan and comes with a pizza cutter to trim it down as you eat.

  • Joyride Taco House

5202 N. Central Ave. Central Phoenix

    602-274-8226

Joyride Taco House is the latest venture from Upward Concepts, with locations in Phoenix and Gilbert. It features a funky and welcoming décor, a happy vibe, and friendly service, but the food doesn’t live up to the scene. Tacos, the backbone of the menu, consistently fall flat. Sidewalk Surfer Chilaquiles were the highlight, and the guacamole is respectable. Cocktails are another highlight, but it’s the atmosphere, not the food, that will keep you coming back.

  • Kaizen PHX

    515 E. Grant St., #100 Downtown Phoenix

    602-432-0752

Kaizen PHX serves Instagram-worthy sushi and sashimi from inside the modern red-brick Lawrence Building in the warehouse district of downtown Phoenix. The restaurant, complete with concrete floors, modern art, and windowed garage doors that open to a patio, is adjacent to Galvanize, a coworking space for tech entrepreneurs. But don’t let the seemingly corporate atmosphere sway you — Kaizen is far from an afterthought inside a business complex. The dishes and flavors are bright and beautiful, from Tuna Poke Cones stuffed with big eye tuna and avocado and rimmed with black and white sesame seeds to Hotate Aguachile with thinly sliced scallops topped with serrano peppers in a spicy, limey, emerald green emulsion. Kaizen pulls inspiration from Japan and Latin America to concoct its versatile creations. Snag a few for half price during happy hour, Tuesday through Saturday, 4-6 p.m.
