  • Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles

3133 N. Scottsdale Rd. South Scottsdale

    480-945-1920

One of Phoenix's best soul food restaurants, Lo Lo's Chicken and Waffles is bound to make everyone happy (except maybe vegetarians). The Southern-style fried chicken is extra crispy and served with cinnamon-kissed golden brown waffles. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. If the signature combo seems too strange for you, Lo Lo's also has a waffle breakfast sandwich with choice of meat, chorizo and eggs, shrimp and grits, chicken gizzards and rice, and some of the best hot wings in town. Other soul food favorites include the PHAT AZZ Samich (chicken of catfish with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and dressing), old-fashioned chili served with cornbread, and side dishes like fried okra and collard greens. This is definitely not a diet-friendly place, especially when you spot the irresistible red velvet cake slathered in buttery cream cheese icing. Complete the picture with a glass or two of Red Kool Aid Drank and you'll think you're in the Deep South, not Phoenix or Scottsdale.

  • Sushi 101

    920 E. Univeristy Dr. #101 Tempe

    480-317-0101

This Japanese restaurant is exactly what its name implies: a stepping stone for sushi virgins. Whether you’ve never had raw fish and sticky rice rolled up in seaweed – or love the stuff but have never made it yourself – Sushi 101 will help you along the way to understanding the iconic dish. The menu comes with a glossary of sushi, which breaks down all of the offerings by ingredient. Don’t know that a caterpillar roll has unagi (eel) and avocado? You do now! The restaurant also offers signature creations like the ASU Roll (real crab meat, avocado, and cucumber wrapped with soy paper and topped with fresh salmon, avocado, and creamy ponzu) and the Moon Walk (sweet potato and avocado topped with spicy tuna and sliced lemon). Along with rolls, Sushi 101 serves sashimi, nigiri, bento specials, noodles, soups, salads, and entrées like grilled salmon and chicken katsu. To learn the trick of the trade, join the sushi making class offered every Sunday afternoon for just $15.

  • Uncle Bear's Bar & Tap

21151 S. Rittenhouse Rd. Queen Creek

    480-882-3177

Whenever we're in the mood to experience some karaoke fun with friends, we head for this East Valley establishment, where singalong action is featured two nights a week. In addition to a full menu of bar food delights, buckets of free peanuts are also available if you'd like a quick snack. Patrons usually discard their shells on the floor, so step carefully when heading to the bathroom between songs or house-brewed pints.

  • Vovomeena

    1515 N. 7th Ave. #170 Central Phoenix

    602-252-2541

This breakfast and brunch restaurant is a refreshing change in the sea of ordinary chain restaurants at Seventh Avenue and McDowell Road. Diners walk up to the counter to order dishes such as Pain Perdu, French toast made of banana bread pudding and topped with whisky caramel, and Tortilla Espanola, a traditional thick Spanish egg-and-potato omelet that looks like a savory slice of cake. If you’re feeling especially ravenous, try the B.M.O.C., a smoked pork chop with a waffle, two eggs, a Portuguese doughnut, and apple-maple syrup. A coffee counter that serves everything from flights of Japanese cold brew to refillable cups of regular Joe. Add a buttermilk pancake or Portuguese doughnut — a small, sweet, cakey concoction sprinkled with powdered sugar — to any order, and thank the breakfast gods for the home-cooked fare.

  • 32 SHEA

    10626 N. 32nd St. North Phoenix

    602-867-7432

A standalone building in the parking lot of a strip mall on 32nd Street and Shea, the intersection from which the eatery gets its name, this cozy little breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot is the kind of restaurant where you could easily spend hours. There is a drive-thru, a patio (larger than the restaurant), and inside, a small bar, a handful of dark wood tables, and an eclectic mix of music overhead. In addition to killer coffee and cocktails, there’s a small menu of easy and affordable dishes, including a satisfying sandwich called the OMG, featuring prosciutto, mascarpone, and figs, and a light yet wonderfully creamy artichoke and spinach dip. And if you like the hazelnut spread Nutella (and who doesn’t?) owner Rebecca Golden will add it to just about anything.

  • 414 Pub & Pizza

    414 S. Mill Ave. #118 Tempe

    480-829-3536

Here’s the 411 on 414 Pub & Pizza on Mill Avenue. For starters, they’re open late seven days a week and that includes delivery within five miles when you’re in the middle of some hardcore Netflixing. Secondly, their entire app menu is dang good, a litany of cleverly named eats like Fried Brittany Spears Pickles and Red Hot Chili Poppers, all made from scratch. They also serve up some serious wings, meaty, twice-cooked morsels that demand closed-eyes, sigh-induced eating. And finally, their pizza won’t win them any awards, but their friendly bartenders just might.

  • Aioli Gourmet Burgers

13730 W. Camelback Road, Suite A Litchfield Park

    623-334-7744

A burger is an easy thing to find in metro Phoenix, but a great burger? That's a little harder. Aioli Gourmet Burgers, which also has a food truck, is our pick when we've got a burger craving. Aioli's offerings start with a Kobe beef patty, and it just gets better from there. Our favorite is the California burger, which tops the meat with avocado, pickled red onions, pepper jack cheese, an over-medium egg, and chipotle aioli. But we've also had great luck ordering the special burgers that are only available for a limited time; past creations include a French onion burger with caramelized onions and Swiss cheese, and a Dad Burger with Sriracha honey peanut butter and apricot preserves. If, for some crazy reason, beef isn't your thing, fear not: You can sub in a chicken breast or a vegan patty. Fresh salads, crave-worthy sides, and a selection of malts and shakes round out a menu that has something for everyone.

  • Ajo Al's

    5101 N. 16th St. Central Phoenix

    602-222-9902

It's best not to stand between us and this restaurant when we're on our way there for steak fajitas, as we're likely to knock you down. We can't wait to get to this giant meal, served with rice, beans, guacamole, and Pico de Gallo. Jammed with spicy peppers, onion, and mushroom, these grilled lovelies can't be beat. We love how Al's serves its kicky salsa in tumblers, and we like to pour it over all the yummy entrees here: delicious chicken flautas, Tacos Morongo, even the tasty breakfast burrito when we're at Al's early in the day. We wish we could be there all day!

  • Ajo Al's

    7458 W. Bell Rd. Glendale

    480-998-1734

Whoever heard of Tacos Morongo? We hadn't, until we started dining each weekend at this popular Mexican diner. Now we're addicted to handmade corn tortillas stuffed with seasoned steak (or chicken, or shrimp) and dressed with fresh cilantro, onions, Jack cheese, and a creamy avocado purée. We ordered it every time we went, until Ajo Al's added a new Rellenos Special to its menu. Chicken or Shrimp, stuffed into a spicy Hatch chile, dipped in batter and fried-it's our new fave! Also fabulous is the Tacos Del Mar platter: Grilled Pacific Hawaiian Ono tacos, served in soft corn tortillas with chipotle cream and cilantro slaw on the side. Don't miss out-get over to Al's!

  • Andreoli Italian Grocer

8880 E. Via Linda North Scottsdale

    480-614-1980

At his shop-meets-restaurant in north Scottsdale, Giovanni Scorzo has assembled a wide-ranging selection of Italian food, including groceries, pastries and sweets, and sit-down-style dishes. Though not cheap, Italian flours, olive oils, canned vegetables and other larder gems beckon from their shelves as you wait in line. Under the glass case up front, you'll find sweets like chocolate-shaped tools, cannoli, and more regional Italian favorites like sfogliatelle and torrone, both strong versions and about as good as you can eat in metro Phoenix. Most people come to Andreoli, though, to eat on-site. The dining room that spills away from the ordering counter is casual but retains a formality (and an element of timelessness) you'd experience at meals in Scorzo's native country. Though he hails from Calabria, Scorzo's cooking often reaches from far southern Italy into the north: Orecchiette with broccoli, Branzino Alle Erbe Fini and Pizza San Francesco di Paola. Salads, sandwiches and a fleet of pastas anchor a menu that prizes tradition. A white board revealing rotating specials tends to delve deep into the annals of Italian gastronomy. As with any Italian restaurant that looks back in time, the kitchen is at its best with regional specialties and plates closest to the earth or sea, like the simple grilled squid with parsley and lemon.

  • Angry Crab Shack

2808 E. Indian School Rd., Suite D110, Phoeinix Mesa

    602-956-3088

Angry Crab Shack is a no-nonsense approach to Cajun seafood. Select from 9 different types of shellfish, choose your heat level and seasoning, and order by the pound. If it sounds similar to Hot N Juicy Crawfish, it is, but it's also better. The seafood is fresh, well prepared and served hot. Service is friendly, efficient and upbeat. The only disappointment was a lackluster bag of clams and gumbo that fell flat. Read our review.

  • Arizona Pizza Company

    15530 W. Roosevelt St. St D104 Goodyear

    623-235-6155

There's pizza, and then there's Arizona Pizza, where we go when we want a southwestern-influenced take on our favorite pie. We're glad that this chain continues to grow, because now in addition to great-tasting food, APC offers convenient locations. We always start with the Gorgonzola Salad, a toss of spinach, mixed greens, bacon, walnuts, and gorgonzola with a warm bacon dressing and a big pile of grilled, marinated chicken. The Bell Road Barbecue Chicken Calzone is a favorite folded pizza, with ricotta, mozzarella, cheddar, and a tart, sweet barbecue sauce we love. Traditional, open-faced pizzas are fresh, doughy crusts topped with homemade marinara and your choice of toppings, some of them unusual (broccoli!) and every one of them tasty.

  • Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.

    721 N. Arizona Ave. Gilbert

    480-284-9863

Plenty of praise has been heaped upon the beers over at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. (chef's kiss to that extra-peachy Sonoran Prince), but the food at this "Arizona-inspired scratch kitchen" is top-notch as well. Wild concoctions like the peanut butter and jalapeño jelly burger and the dry-rub chicken drumsticks confit are reason alone to drop in to the original Gilbert location, which opened in 2013. Ditto the duck fat fries, which are memorable, weighty, and served piping-hot, flavored with rosemary and thyme, and paired with garlic aioli; no visit to the brewery should go without a basket for the table. AZ Wilderness opened a beer garden in downtown Phoenix on Roosevelt Row in 2019, and this location offers a tighter version of the Gilbert flagship's menu. But the fries are available, as are other go-tos like the Downtowner Burger (corn guac, pepper jack, onion strings), the AZ Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the shareable bites of Buffalo cauliflower. New Normal: Both the Gilbert and Phoenix locations have open-air seating options. The downtown spot also doubles as a bird-friendly beer garden.

  • Arizona Wilderness DTPHX

201 E. Roosevelt St. Central Phoenix

    480-462-1836

Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. opened its downtown Phoenix beer garden (the original’s in Gilbert) in 2019 with the goal of becoming the living room of Roosevelt Row. To say it has succeeded would be an understatement. The massive patio, sun-shaded and full of native plants meant to attract local birds and bugs, is a major draw in the neighborhood, to the point that the crowds sometimes spill over into a line down the sidewalk. Popular beers include Refuge, the “flagship IPA incepted in our founder’s garage,” or so the menu states, as well as the DON'T F#%K IT UP Blonde Ale and the Belgian-style witbier Sonora White. The food rocks, too: We like the PB&J Burger and the duck fat fries.

  • The Arrogant Butcher

2 E. Jefferson St. Downtown Phoenix

    602-324-8502

If you must dine in downtown Phoenix, try this 7,500-square-foot urban grill - where an ambitious menu holds a few hits along with the misses. We love the pate and the salads, though we recommend skipping the too-salty pastrami sandwich and the rather limp fries. Daily specials like Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes (every Monday) and the Wednesday night Slow-Roasted Prime Rib bring people back again and again - or maybe it's just a lack of options. Here's to arrogance!

The market is easy to navigate, thanks to wide, well-organized aisles stocked with specialty food items from across Asia. Come hungry: The food court is home to a location of Paik's Noodles, a popular Chinese-Korean chain noodle shop, along with metro Phoenix's first location of Tous Les Jours, a popular French-Asian bakery cafe chain.

  • The Attic

4247 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-955-1967

Finger foods and affordable craft beer are the order of the day here.  Located on the second floor, this beer garden and wine bar technically is not in an attic, but it's high enough in relation to surrounding buildings to offer great views, even when you're seated inside. The dark paint and dark wood furniture create a cozy feel and the quirky, humorous framed art pieces and used tap handles hanging from the ceiling make for excellent conversation starters. The food? Almost all of the Attic's apps are $2 off during happy hour. Local favorites include the Brie and candied pancetta bruschetta, the caprese, and the Arcadia Attic wings. An interesting list of beers on tap will include at least one brew you've never heard of. And with more than 20 selections to choose from, you're sure to find something worth sipping.

  • Autumn Court Chinese Restaurant

3752 E. Indian School Rd. East Phoenix

    602-234-0512

Same food, different location from the old-school-cool space in a former IHOP on Central Avenue that evoked Roman Polanski's Chinatown in decor and comestibles. Alas, the kitchen at the Central Avenue locale fell victim to a fire in late '05, closing the place for the next year. The new spot looks more like a Swiss chalet from some Pink Panther flick than an eatery plucked from the pages of Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett. But the service is friendly, and the Szechuan-Mandarin-Cantonese menu features such crowd-pleasers as egg foo young, lo mein, kung pao chicken, and pot stickers. Nothing fancy. Just solid neighborhood Chinese fare in comfy, eye-friendly quarters.

Nichols applies his training to the process of cooking meat. The result is that European technique and American cuisine merge.
