Sushi bars are fully mainstream in the States, but it’s amazing that izakaya aren’t. In Japan, these establishments could be everything from noisy pubs to upscale taverns, but they all revolve around drinking with friends and sharing small, savory dishes. New York and L.A. have seen an izakaya boom in the past few years, and now even the execs behind P.F. Chang’s are in on the trend with Taneko. In a dramatic dining room reminiscent of an old-fashioned Japanese country house, guests sip shochu cocktails and nibble on beautifully presented plates of Wild Alaskan black cod in mirin broth, tempura-fried squash blossoms, and house-made tofu. The Hot Rock, a cook-your-own-Kobe-beef appetizer, is sure to become Taneko’s star dish.
