At first, we didn't get the concept here, beyond what the name implied. Asian cuisine meets Cuban? Hmm. Admittedly, we were curious enough to get decked out in our hippest clothes and brave the scene at the über-chic Mondrian hotel. And as soon as we snagged a table at this seriously stylish spot — where the staff, the seating, the décor is all done up in mod white, and seductive salsa music blares at full blast — one glance at the menu made it all come together for us. Thinking about what rice and beans mean to both Caribbean and Asian cultures, and the shared appreciation of pork, seafood, spicy chile peppers and sweet tropical fruits, it all clicked in an instant. Brilliant, we thought — as creative and clever as it is delicious. Go with a group of friends, so you can share huge family-style dishes like ropa vieja of duck, served as make-your-own lettuce wraps, Cuban-spiced chicken with Thai coconut sticky rice, and the glorious Hunan-style fish, a whole fried bass filled with a fiery mélange of peppers, onion, and crabmeat. The fusion concept even extends to the dessert menu, which features some of the best flan in town. Kissed with flavors of vanilla, lemongrass, and kaffir leaves, it's the ultimate complement to two culinary traditions.
