Artists dream of making a mark in all sorts of ways. Odds are that most never dreamed of making art to grace a cardboard postal mailer or a city flag, but Arizona artists have that chance, thanks to some new calls for art.
Here’s a rundown on fresh opportunities for visual and performance artists.
"Flat Rate Box"
Modified Arts is creating an exhibition of work created using flat rate postal boxes, which will be on view from December 15, 2017, to January 13, 2018. Submissions are due on Sunday, November 12. Learn more on the Modified Arts website.
National Latino Playwriting Award
Arizona Theatre Company is currently accepting submissions for its 2018 National Latino Playwriting Award, which is open to all Latino playwrights living in the United States, its territories, or Mexico. "Unwrapped" Community Art Show
PSA Art Awakenings, a nonprofit that provides arts experiences for people living with mental illness, is looking for work to feature in an upcoming exhibition at its Warehouse 1005 gallery in Roosevelt Row. Waterview Public Art Project
Scottsdale Public Art is seeking up to three artists or artist teams to create artistic enhancements for amenities along the Arizona Canal in downtown Scottsdale. The amenities include a multi-use path, pedestrian bridge spanning the canal, and shade structures, to name a few. The total project budget is up to $2 million. Tiny Works Tiny Dances 3
{9} The Gallery is looking for small-scale artworks to show during the third iteration of its annual pairing of a salon-style exhibition with dances performed inside the gallery atop 4-by-4-foot stages. Studio/LAB Residency
[nueBOX] is accepting applications for its artist residency at Mesa Arts Center, which includes 40 hours of rehearsal space, documentation, and a $250 stipend. Scottsdale Flag
The City of Scottsdale, which is currently exploring rebranding concepts, has issued a call for designs for a possible new official flag. They're looking for designs that reflect several key components of the city's identity, including western heritage, natural beauty, and modern art and culture. Mini Grants
Arizona Humanities is accepting applications for mini grants of up to $2,000 on a rolling basis, until funds for these grants are exhausted. Any nonprofit group can apply – including historical societies, libraries, museums, and tribal organizations, to name a few. Applicants can watch a mini grants webinar online. Solo Exhibition
Shemer Art Center and Museum is accepting proposals for solo exhibitions by artists working in diverse media, which will be reviewed by a panel of jurors. Proposals are kept on file for up to two years. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Get details on the Shemer Art Center website.
Resident Artist
Grand ArtHaus, an artist studio and exhibition space, has an opening for a resident artist. Graphic designers, sculptors, photographers, and other visual artists are welcome to apply. Artists pay $350 per month for co-working space, exhibition space, and other benefits. Current artists include Robert Gentile, Michael Viglietta, Lucinda Yrene, Aimee Shattuck, and Tariq Sabur. Experimental Art Night
[nueBOX] has openings for its Experimental Art Night happening on Saturday, December 9, at Mesa Arts Center. The evening provides a supportive environment for artists to present works in progress, completed pieces, or performance experiments. Performers are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Mantle at MADE
MADE Art Boutique in Roosevelt Row has a call for artists who would like to present a solo exhibition in its art space called the Mantle at MADE. Exhibitions open on Third Friday and run for one month. Find more information on the MADE website.
Arizona Biennial
Tucson Museum of Art has issued a call for art for Arizona artists interested in being considered for the "Arizona Biennial 2018" exhibition, which is being curated by Rebecca R. Hart, curator of modern and contemporary art for the Denver Art Museum. Hart will consider digital images and video submissions showing works in any media.
