A Street Fair Named Desire

The supersweet yet sometimes unpredictable textile-and-homemade-artist-goods scene is going through some changes one mo’ gin. The Collectively Operated Local Artists Boutique (C.O.L.A.B.) is closing up shop at the anti.space building and setting up a bigger and better space at 901 North Fifth Street under the Conspire moniker, marking the group’s third move in the past two years (the new collective’s expanded concept includes public workshops, artist studio space, and an anarchist library). From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 6, members of Conspire -- including textile queen Lisa Jacobs, a.k.a. Sticker Club Girl, and a grip of local fashion designers and crafters -- sell their one-of-a-kind creations during the Artist Street Fair outside Royal Coffee Bar.

This month, the caffeinated hang features the artwork of pimp print designer Jason Hill, whose “Modern Oasis” exhibit showcases new architectural photographs captured with the medium-format film camera for shutterbugs on a budget known as a Holga, a cheap-o plastic creation sporting a lens basically made from plastic wrap that produces unpredictable and sometimes trippy results.
